Here’s What You Get From The ‘A Spooky Message’ Special Research In ‘Pokémon GO’

Pokemon GOCredit: Niantic

It’s Halloween in Pokémon GO, and this year’s event comes with something that we haven’t seen in any event so far. There’s new special research to be had, which you’ll be greeted with as soon as you tap the research icon upon entering the game. The name of the quest is “A Spooky Message,” and it’s a little shorter than previous tasks with only three steps. The first is no joke, asking you to catch 10 Ghost-type Pokémon, Make 8 great throws and use 108 berries to help catch Pokémon. It’s that last one that’s going to take you a little while, particularly in less-dense areas.

Luckily we already know a bit about what we’ll be getting from these research task thanks to prominent Pokémon GO dataminer Chrales. You can see all the quest dialogue here on Twitter, but the gist is that Professor Willow is having an issue with a poltergeist-like Pokémon, and it winds up being Spiritomb.

This marks the first non-mythical special research task in Pokémon GO, which I’m all here for. The first special research task rewarded players with Mew, the mythical Kanto region Pokémon, followed by Celebi from the Johto region. And while those are excellent rewards, it’s a high bar for special research: there are only so many mythical Pokémon out there, and that’s pretty limiting when it comes to Pokémon GO’s more elaborate quests. Which is a shame, because special research is a great organizing principle for play: it gives you a task to go out and complete, something you don’t always have when you’re playing this game.

Hopefully, this leads to more regular special research tasks, whether tied to in-game events or not, but we’ll see. For now, get to using berries and grab Spiritomb. Previous special research tasks have not come with time limits, but this one will be leaving the game along with the Halloween event. It’s a little unclear if we’ll be able to get it later on without trading, but best to just go ahead and get it yourself while there’s still time. The silver pinap berries are a nice bonus, too.
