CLEVELAND, Ohio — Though the “Year of the Woman” didn’t pan out in Ohio, woman candidates across the country made history.

Women candidates won 96 seats U.S. House seats on Tuesday, more than ever before. A record  number of women were running for Congress in 2018.

The trend isn’t an anomaly; women will likely run in similar numbers in the future, said Barbara Palmer, Baldwin Wallace University Center for Women and Politics of Ohio. In 2020, don’t expect another huge increase, or a drop off, either, Palmer said.

“If we look back historically, it would suggest that this is not a one-off. That this is part of a larger trend,” Palmer said.

The wins Tuesday are historic. Muslim women and Native American women were elected to Congress for the first time, multiple outlets are reporting. The youngest woman ever was elected to Congress, too.

Here’s a look at the notable firsts women candidates saw on Election Day.
